ExpressVPN Launches into Private AI with ExpressAI
ExpressVPN, a major player in the virtual private network (VPN) sector, has recently announced the launch of ExpressAI, a new private artificial intelligence (AI) interface. This initiative marks a significant step for the company, following in the footsteps of Proton VPN, another pioneer in the field of digital privacy. ExpressAI is currently accessible only to subscribers of the Pro plan of ExpressVPN. This service offers a browser-integrated user interface, providing access to multiple AI models while emphasizing the protection of personal data.
The service includes features such as 500 usage credits per day and 2 GB of storage. ExpressVPN emphasizes the confidentiality of interactions, stating that user data will not be used to train the AI models. Additionally, the history of interactions is encrypted, and a security audit was conducted by Cure53 prior to the launch, ensuring a high level of security.
A Growing Market for Confidential AI
With the launch of ExpressAI, ExpressVPN is joining a growing trend where VPN providers are exploring the potential of privacy-focused AI assistants. These services are designed to offer enhanced protection of personal data, an increasingly crucial issue in the digital age. ExpressVPN assures that the data processed by ExpressAI, such as conversations, files, and images, are not accessible by the company and are not used to train the AI models.
The architecture of ExpressAI is based on an isolated environment, preventing access to data during processing. The service integrates five AI models, including GPT OSS 120B, DeepSeek R1 Distill 32B, and Qwen2.5-VL 32B, allowing users to browse the web directly from the platform without leaving the interface.
Proton, another privacy-focused provider, had already launched Lumo in July 2025, a similar service that also emphasizes the protection of conversations and the encryption of histories. The arrival of ExpressAI confirms the emergence of a new competitive field in the AI sector, where the promises of privacy once associated with encrypted emails, cloud services, or VPNs are now extending to conversational interactions.
Diversification of Offerings in the VPN Sector
The launch of ExpressAI is part of a broader strategy of diversification at ExpressVPN. In September 2025, the company restructured its subscriptions into three distinct plans: Basic, Advanced, and Pro, thereby making its offerings clearer and more varied. In February 2026, ExpressVPN introduced ExpressKeys, a standalone app for iOS and Android, followed by ExpressMailGuard, an alias mail service designed to mask users' primary addresses.
This diversification reflects a general trend in the VPN sector, where providers are seeking to stand out by offering comprehensive security suites. NordVPN, for example, launched Threat Protection and Dark Web Monitor, while CyberGhost offers a security suite for Windows. Surfshark, on the other hand, has bundled several services into Surfshark One, which includes a VPN, antivirus, and a data leak alert module.
Major VPN providers, having reached a similar level of performance in terms of protocols, speeds, and server networks, are now turning to complementary services to differentiate themselves. ExpressVPN, known for its reliability and ease of use, continues to innovate to meet the growing security and privacy needs of users.
ExpressVPN remains one of the top-performing premium VPNs on the market, offering high speeds and remarkable stability. While the company favors a streamlined approach with fewer advanced settings than some competitors, it maintains exemplary cross-platform coverage, instilling confidence for intensive daily use. However, performance may vary depending on server location, highlighting the importance of continuous innovation in this rapidly evolving sector.
