Canva 2.0: An Ambitious Transformation Through AI
Canva has recently unveiled its new innovation, Canva AI 2.0, marking a crucial step in its transformation. The company has begun its transition towards a true "creative operating system" in 2025. To bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, Canva has made several strategic acquisitions. Among the companies acquired are Affinity, MangoAI, Cavalry, Simtheory, and Ortto. This series of acquisitions has allowed Canva to evolve from a simple design platform incorporating AI tools to an AI platform integrating design tools. This paradigm shift is embodied by the launch of Canva AI 2.0, a major advancement announced today.
A Conversational Agentic Platform
With the introduction of Canva AI 2.0, Canva now positions itself as a "conversational agentic platform." The numbers reflect the success of this strategy: last year, Canva generated $4 billion in annualized revenue and boasts over 265 million users, of which 31 million are paying subscribers. The company has bet on artificial intelligence to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of its tools, a gamble that has paid off with over 27 billion uses of its smart tools since their launch. However, Canva has identified that the complexity of AI has prevented many users from fully leveraging these tools. To address this, the company has launched Canva AI 2.0, based on the Canva Proteus, Canva Lucid Origin, and Canva I2V models, which are not only 7 times faster but also 30 times cheaper than existing alternatives.
A More Powerful and Flexible AI Architecture
Creating designs with Canva AI previously required multiple iterations, forcing users to constantly refine their instructions and check for consistency with their brand elements. To simplify this process, Canva has introduced several innovations:
-
Conversational Design: Users can now describe their projects to the assistant, either in writing or verbally. The tool then creates a modifiable design while retaining the initial context.
-
Agentic Orchestration: The AI automatically selects the most suitable Canva tools for user requests, adjusting designs to the required format.
-
Active Memory: With persistent memory, the AI can learn from past interactions and continuously adapt the user experience.
-
Targeted AI Processing: Creations are no longer static but fully modifiable, allowing for precise changes without altering the entire design.
Thus, Canva AI becomes a true creative partner, offering increased flexibility and performance.
Completely Rethought Workflows
Canva has also enriched its creative suite with new features that promise to revolutionize workflows. A smart customization option allows the platform to automatically integrate brand elements into new designs and instantly update projects if the visual identity changes. This represents a significant time-saving for professionals.
Users can also more easily incorporate information into their creations thanks to:
-
A web search feature that allows for structuring and integrating data found online into designs.
-
Numerous connectors added to link Canva to third-party applications like Slack, Notion, HubSpot, Zoom, Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Calendar.
-
An AI scheduling feature that enables automatic design creation on a specified date, even offline, thanks to the AI working in the background.
Finally, Canva Code 2.0 now offers an HTML import option, facilitating the editing of HTML files or existing Canva AI projects without having to regenerate the code. Users can also integrate forms or spreadsheets into a Canva website, with enhanced security provided by single sign-on.
Strengthened Partnership with Anthropic
The launch of Canva AI 2.0 is accompanied by a strengthened partnership with Anthropic, integrating the power of the Design Engine and Visual Suite directly into Claude. Users can now import content from major AI platforms, such as Claude and ChatGPT, directly into Canva, where they can be modified at will.
These innovations reflect Canva's commitment to making design and intelligent tools accessible to everyone. The new features will be showcased at the Canva Create event and will be available in preview for the first million users who discover the functionality on the homepage. For others, the full rollout will take a few more weeks.
