This precision allows Sortera to maximize its profits per pound of sorted aluminum.
Amp's Innovative Approach
Amp, on the other hand, uses an AI-powered sorting system to process both recycling streams and general waste. This system relies on sensors, including visible and infrared cameras, to identify various materials, from packaging to aluminum foil, and to distinguish plastics from aluminum. Waste moves along conveyor belts where robotic arms and blowers separate materials with over 90% accuracy, according to Amp.
Untapped Potential in Recycling
Horowitz also noted that in metropolitan areas with effective recycling programs, half of the aluminum ends up in the trash without even going through the recycling system. Recycling facilities like those of Sortera and Amp could play a crucial role in increasing the supply of aluminum, a critical mineral for the economy.
