Bluesky Introduces Attie, a Controversial AI Assistant

This weekend, Bluesky made headlines by launching Attie, a new artificial intelligence-based assistant. However, this initiative has faced strong opposition from the community. Attie, named after the AT Protocol, was intended to represent a technological advancement for the platform, but it has raised concerns among users.

Bluesky, struggling to compete with giants like X and Threads, continues to develop its features at its own pace. With over 43 million users, the platform recently introduced tools such as end-to-end encrypted messaging, a "dislike" button, and private bookmarks. Despite these additions, the introduction of Attie has been perceived as a misplaced priority by many users.

A Massive Rejection from the Community

At the ATmosphere conference, Bluesky enthusiastically presented Attie. However, the reaction was swift and negative: over 125,000 users blocked the AI account within hours, placing it just behind JD Vance, whose account was blocked by more than 180,000 users, and ahead of ICE and the White House, blocked by over 112,000 and 122,000 users respectively. In contrast, only 1,500 users chose to follow Attie.

This rejection can be attributed to the perception of Bluesky as a refuge for those who value their privacy. The introduction of an AI has been seen as a betrayal, especially as basic features, like adding images in private messages, are still lacking.

Attie: A Misunderstood AI?

The hostility towards Attie seems less related to its features than to what it represents. Attie allows users to create personalized feeds within the AT Protocol ecosystem, but its use remains optional. Jay Graber, founder and former CEO of Bluesky, emphasized that the assistant operates as a separate application and is not imposed on users.

Bluesky insists that the AI should serve users rather than platforms. Unlike other major platforms that use AI to manipulate user engagement and data, Bluesky aims to provide a privacy-respecting alternative. Despite this, distrust persists, and Bluesky will need to work hard to regain the trust of its community.
