Bluesky Innovates with Attie, an AI for Customized Feeds
Bluesky, the company behind numerous advancements in the social media space, has recently expanded its scope by launching a new application. Unlike its previous projects, this application is not a social network but an assistant powered by artificial intelligence. Named Attie, it allows users to design their own algorithms and create personalized feeds. Ultimately, it could even enable the coding of entire applications.
At the Atmosphere conference held this weekend, Jay Graber, former CEO of Bluesky and current head of innovation, presented Attie alongside Paul Frazee, the company's CTO. Attendees at the event had the opportunity to be among the first to test this beta version of the application. Attie utilizes Claude, a technology developed by Anthropic, to provide an agentic social experience based on Bluesky's AT Protocol, often abbreviated as atproto.
A Standalone Product for Advanced Customization
Toni Schneider, interim CEO of Bluesky and partner at True Ventures, clarified in an interview that Attie is a distinct product from Bluesky's main application. "We have launched many features within Bluesky, but Attie is our first standalone product developed by the new team led by Jay," he explained. This application allows users to create personalized feeds using natural language commands, as if they were interacting with a chatbot.
To access Attie, users must log in with their Atmosphere ID, which is valid for all applications operating on the atproto protocol, including Bluesky. Thanks to the openness of this ecosystem, Attie can understand user preferences and tailor content accordingly.
A User-Centric AI
Schneider emphasizes that Attie is designed to be a user-centric tool. "You can control and shape your feed without needing programming skills," he asserted. The goal is to expand users' capabilities to build on the Atmosphere, focusing on the positive impact of AI.
At launch, Attie will allow users to create and visualize feeds, which can then be integrated into Bluesky or other applications using atproto. In the long term, the application could enable users to develop their own social applications and tools.
A Return to Roots for Jay Graber
Jay Graber, who recently stepped down as CEO to focus on product development, has been a key driver behind Attie. "She realized she wanted to spend more time creating rather than managing," Schneider stated. Graber expressed her vision that AI should serve users rather than platforms, empowering them to control their own algorithms.
Graber also highlighted that the current use of AI by major platforms is often self-serving, seeking to maximize user time spent on their applications. She criticizes this approach, asserting that AI should be at the service of users, allowing them to create feeds that truly meet their needs and preferences.
Strong Funding for the Future
Bluesky recently announced that it raised $100 million in a funding round closed last year. This amount ensures the company financial stability for the next three years, allowing it to tackle challenges such as improving privacy controls and monetizing its social network, which boasts 43.4 million users.
Schneider explained that this funding is a strong signal to the community, indicating that Bluesky is here to stay and has the resources necessary to continue innovating. The company plans to use these funds to develop new features and enhance the user experience on its platform.
No Cryptocurrency on the Horizon
Despite support from several investors in the cryptocurrency space, Schneider assured that there are no plans to integrate crypto-related features into Attie. The company prefers to explore other monetization avenues, such as subscriptions or hosting services.
Schneider explained that while some investors are interested in the decentralization offered by blockchain, Bluesky is focused on creating a decentralized social network without resorting to cryptocurrencies. This approach aims to avoid potential issues related to scams and instability often associated with this field.
An Open Ecosystem Inspired by WordPress
Schneider compares the Atmosphere to WordPress, highlighting its potential to become a decentralized ecosystem where various applications and services can coexist. "With WordPress, we saw a multi-billion dollar ecosystem emerge. We hope the Atmosphere will follow a similar trajectory," he concluded.
He added that the Atmosphere, as an open system, allows anyone to participate and contribute to its development. This approach could lead to the creation of a dynamic and diverse ecosystem, where many applications and services can thrive together, while providing users with a personalized and enriching experience.
