Bond: A New Approach to Social Media to Combat Digital Addiction

Traditional social media platforms have long been designed to capture users' attention, encouraging them to spend considerable time scrolling through a variety of often trivial content. This strategy, while effective for generating advertising revenue, has led to user saturation and fatigue. In response to this trend, new companies are seeking to offer alternatives that promote healthier and more meaningful interactions.

Bond, which was officially launched on Tuesday, is part of this new wave. Its co-founder and CEO, Dino Becirovic, presents Bond as an innovative solution using artificial intelligence to combat screen addiction, particularly prevalent in the United States.

A Focus on Real Experiences

Bond allows its users to share their recent activities in the form of "memories," incorporating various media such as photos, videos, and audio recordings. Unlike traditional social networks, Bond stands out for its ability to generate ideas for real activities based on the memories shared by its users.

Bond's AI system analyzes the shared experiences to provide personalized recommendations. For example, a user expressing interest in Pho might receive a suggestion for a well-rated Vietnamese restaurant nearby. Similarly, a heavy metal fan could be informed about an Iron Maiden concert in their city.

Encouraging a Return to Reality

The primary goal of Bond is to encourage users to leave the app to experience the real world. By posting more memories, users receive increasingly relevant recommendations, steering them away from "doomscrolling" and encouraging them to explore their surroundings.

Bond's interface resembles that of Instagram, but without a continuous news feed. Profiles are presented in clusters, and user stories, visible for 24 hours, are then archived for private access.

An Experienced Team Behind Bond

The Bond team consists of professionals who have contributed to the development of major social platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook. Dino Becirovic has also worked at Kleiner Perkins and Index Ventures, while Arthur Bražinskas, Bond's founding researcher, co-led user signal integration at Google Gemini.

An Innovative Business Model

Unlike most social networks that rely on advertising revenue, Bond is exploring other monetization avenues. Becirovic envisions a future where users could license their personal data, derived from their archived memories, to companies looking to train AI models. Bond would then take a minimal commission on these transactions.

"The idea is to allow users to monetize their memories," explains Becirovic. "If we can attract a large number of people to share their daily lives, we will become a valuable resource for those developing models like GPT-6 and GPT-7."

In another scenario, Bond could use its accumulated data to act as a product recommendation tool integrated into e-commerce sites. "Our users could choose to participate in this experience. If we can achieve this, we believe we could capture a portion of the transaction value with merchants by enhancing user experience, increasing conversion, and/or boosting volume," said Becirovic.

Data Protection and Privacy

Bond is committed to never selling user data for advertising purposes. Users have the option to delete their memories or profile at any time. Memories can be deleted either directly in the Memory tab or by using natural language in the Memory chat. Becirovic also promises ongoing improvements in data encryption, although current details remain vague. "End-to-end encryption is a priority for us," he asserts, while ensuring that data is currently stored securely.

Prioritizing User Experience

For now, Bond's priority is to provide a rewarding app experience for its users. "Monetization is not our immediate priority," says Becirovic. "We want to first create a platform where users find real value in sharing their memories."
