OpenAI and Broadcom: A Conditional Partnership

OpenAI aims to develop its own artificial intelligence chip in collaboration with Broadcom. However, this initiative faces significant financial hurdles. According to The Information, the first phase of the project requires an investment of approximately $18 billion. Broadcom has set a strict condition: Microsoft must commit to purchasing 40% of the chips produced for the funding to be secured. To date, Microsoft has not yet agreed to this commitment.

Sachin Katti, an executive at OpenAI, expressed in an internal message that this dependency on Microsoft is "financially unattractive" and could become a long-term hindrance. Despite these concerns, OpenAI continues with the project to leverage the strategic advantages it could offer. However, Katti clarified that this arrangement would only pertain to the first chip.

The Nexus Project: A Colossal Ambition

The complete project, dubbed "Nexus," aims to achieve a capacity of 10 gigawatts for data centers. The total production cost of the chips could reach $180 billion. The first chip, named "Jalapeno," is designed to surpass current Nvidia hardware in terms of efficiency for running OpenAI's models. However, its availability is not expected before 2027.

The Financial Challenges of OpenAI

This is not the first time OpenAI, as a private company, has encountered difficulties in securing significant financial agreements. SoftBank had to reduce an initially guaranteed loan backed by OpenAI shares from $10 billion to $6 billion, as lenders struggled to assess the value of a private company like OpenAI.
