The Insidious Impact of AI on Human Skills
Artificial intelligence, while a powerful tool for enhancing productivity, poses a subtle yet significant risk to human skills. By circumventing rather than reinforcing these skills, AI can lead to a gradual loss of essential capabilities within organizations.
A common example is an employee who has become accustomed to relying on AI to draft strategic documents. When faced with a situation where they have no access to this tool, they may experience unexpected difficulties in structuring their ideas, revealing an erosion of skills that were once mastered.

The Illusion of Improvement through AI

Quality Judgment: Evaluating the relevance and usefulness of a result is a crucial skill acquired through experience, but it can be lost without practice. This judgment concerns not only the quality of writing but also the accuracy and relevance in a given context.
An Invisible Organizational Risk
Individually, the loss of these skills can be managed. Collectively, it poses a major risk. If an entire team delegates fact-checking to AI, it becomes vulnerable to undetected errors.
This risk is difficult to measure with traditional performance indicators, as apparent productivity can mask decisions based on erroneous data. Standard metrics do not reveal this erosion of skills, as they focus on productivity and speed.
When no one is able to detect an error in a strategic report or question an analysis produced by a model, it is no longer an individual problem but a risk for the entire organization.
Towards Conscious Use of AI
Unlearning is not inevitable. Organizations must understand how AI truly works and under what conditions it is reliable. This involves not blindly adopting tools that promise increased efficiency but evaluating their actual utility.
This conscious choice allows for the maintenance of autonomy and avoids excessive dependence on technology that is not fully understood. The goal is not to reject AI but to integrate it thoughtfully to preserve essential human skills.
It is about understanding what AI actually does, not just at a technical level, but fundamentally. This enables informed delegation and ensures the ability to govern what one chooses to delegate.
