Character.AI, an artificial intelligence platform, has recently introduced an innovative feature that promises to transform the way we interact with literary works. Named Books, this new option allows users to immerse themselves in the narratives of classic literature by embodying their favorite characters through AI.
A New Dimension for Classics
Launched last Thursday, the Books feature offers a unique role-playing experience. Users can choose from over 20 titles in the public domain, such as Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby. This feature goes beyond the simple interactive discussions offered by Character.AI, providing a total immersion in the narrative universe.
Varied Interaction Modes
To get started, users can log onto the Character.AI site and choose from different interaction modes. The Story Modes allow users to play as an existing character or create a new one. Two options are available: follow the original plot with the Book arc mode or invent their own story with the Go off script mode. Character.AI also plans to introduce the TapTale mode soon, which will guide users with pre-written prompts.
Meanwhile, the Alternate Universe Remixes offer the opportunity to reinvent the classics, such as placing Alice in Wonderland in space or transforming Elizabeth Bennet into a modern romantic comedy heroine. This feature is accessible to Character.AI Plus subscribers on mobile and web, as part of Character.AI Labs.
Enhanced Safety Measures
Character.AI has taken steps to enhance user safety. After settling lawsuits regarding emotional harm caused by its chatbots, the platform now prohibits access to open discussions for anyone under 18 years old. Both Google and Character.AI settled lawsuits earlier this year concerning allegations that these AI chatbots caused emotional harm to minors and led children to suicide. This decision follows concerns about the emotional vulnerability of teenagers.
