Opera has recently expanded access to its Browser Connector feature for its consumer browsers, Opera One and Opera GX. Initially reserved for the premium offering Opera Neon, this technology now allows AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude to interact directly with the content of open tabs, eliminating the need for manual copy-pasting.
A Technology from the MCP Connector
In March 2026, Opera introduced the MCP Connector in its paid browser Opera Neon. This protocol, known as the Model Context Protocol, acts as a universal interface allowing compatible AI assistants to connect to third-party tools, such as a browser. This technology is now available for free in Opera One and Opera GX, in Early Bird mode, meaning it is in their testing environment.
Features and Activation
With Browser Connector, users can enable ChatGPT or Claude to read visited pages, identify open tabs, and take screenshots to analyze images or graphs. This feature provides a real-time view of content without manual intervention.
To activate Browser Connector, users must:
- Access the Settings of Opera One or Opera GX
- Look for "AI Services"
- Install Browser Connector
- Connect a ChatGPT or Claude account
An Open Strategy
Opera justifies this integration with its open strategy. Since early 2023, ChatGPT has joined the browser's sidebar, followed by the deployment of an internal multi-LLM AI. According to Mohamed Salah, Senior Product Director at Opera, this approach allows users not to be confined to a single ecosystem but to combine the best tools to meet their specific needs.
