ChatGPT Finances: A New Era for Managing Your Personal Finances
With the arrival of ChatGPT Finances, a new dimension opens up for those looking to manage their finances in a centralized and intelligent way. Thanks to this feature, it is now possible to visualize all of your assets, liabilities, and investments in one place, while benefiting from AI analyses to better understand your financial situation.
Key Points to Remember
- ChatGPT integrates with financial accounts via Plaid.
- It offers a detailed analysis of expenses, debts, subscriptions, and investments.
- It does not allow for transactions or access to full account numbers.
Since I started using ChatGPT, it has become an indispensable tool for various tasks, including managing my finances. It guided me in opening brokerage accounts, helped me understand the basics of investing, and directed me to educational resources. Thanks to its advice, I achieved an average return of 16% on my investments, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving my financial decisions.
The Appeal of ChatGPT Finances
When I learned that OpenAI was offering a new personal finance experience via ChatGPT, my curiosity was piqued. Like many, I managed my finances in a traditional way, juggling account balances, debts, subscriptions, and recurring expenses using spreadsheets and banking apps. ChatGPT Finances promises to simplify this process by allowing a secure connection to my financial accounts via Plaid, including my investment accounts. Once synchronized, ChatGPT can answer questions based on my real data.
Using ChatGPT Finances
Necessary Prerequisites:
OpenAI's Finance feature is available for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in the United States, accessible via web, iOS, and Android. It can connect to a wide range of financial institutions but requires a free Plaid account to get started. Plaid provides a secure bridge between your accounts and ChatGPT.

Accessing ChatGPT Finances
Some users may receive an invitation to connect their finances. For my part, I found this feature in the sidebar of ChatGPT under "More," then accessed Finances. A Google search also led me to a direct link to this experience. OpenAI specifies that you can also initiate this function from a conversation by typing, for example, "@Finances, connect my accounts." -
Connecting Accounts
After opening Finances, I chose "Connect Finances." ChatGPT explained that I needed to connect my financial accounts to synchronize my data. I took care to read the terms carefully, as I was granting ChatGPT access to sensitive financial information, such as my balances, transactions, investments, and debts. Using Plaid to link my accounts was straightforward, as I already had a free Plaid account. I added my banks and financial institutions one by one, authenticated each account, approved the connection, and that was it. Depending on the institution, multifactor authentication may be required. I was able to connect almost all my accounts, including SeaComm, Chase, Capital One, Fidelity Investments, and PayPal. However, my Affirm account was not yet compatible with Plaid. -
Data Synchronization
Once authentication was complete, ChatGPT began synchronizing my data. OpenAI indicates that this may take a few minutes. After about five minutes, I asked ChatGPT about my finances, but it informed me that synchronization was still in progress. So, I waited an hour before checking again, and everything was finally ready. -
Exploring the Finances Dashboard
Once the accounts were connected, ChatGPT Finances presented a dashboard offering a comprehensive overview. According to OpenAI, this may include portfolio performance, expenses, subscriptions, upcoming payments, etc. On my Finances screen, I can initiate a conversation and access several preloaded prompts, such as "Where could I reduce expenses, subscriptions, or fees this year?" A dashboard also breaks down expenses by month and category, upcoming activities, subscriptions, bills, and recent transactions. -
Interacting with ChatGPT Finances
What I particularly appreciate about ChatGPT Finances is its ability to manage multiple accounts simultaneously, whether they are checking accounts, credit cards, investment and retirement accounts, or lenders. This allows ChatGPT to truly understand my budget. Here are some questions I asked:- What recurring charges have I had over the last six months?
- Which subscriptions have recently increased in price?
- What are my largest spending categories this month?
- How much have I spent on groceries, restaurants, and takeout in the last 90 days?
- Which credit card should I prioritize for repayment?
- Am I saving enough each month based on my income and expenses?
- How much have I contributed to my Roth IRA this year?
- What is my current investment allocation between stocks, bonds, and cash?
- Are there any unusual charges I should review?
- What would happen if I paid an extra $200 per month on my student debt?
OpenAI also specifies that you can provide ChatGPT with additional financial context, such as a savings goal or a debt, to enrich future conversations.
My Experience with ChatGPT Finances
I plan to continue using ChatGPT to manage my finances, but with certain precautions. Now that ChatGPT has access to my financial data, I have set up access keys and multifactor authentication, and I have enrolled in advanced account security, which enforces stricter login methods and disables certain options like email account recovery. These security features are available in ChatGPT under Settings > Security and Login. The ability to ask questions about my personal finances with real data, rather than manual summaries, is extremely valuable. I can obtain insights on recurring charges, spending changes, investments, debts, and cash flow without having to input everything myself. ChatGPT has already acted as a financial advisor for me, and this new feature represents a radical change.
So far, ChatGPT Finances has helped me better understand my spending and make decisions regarding investment, savings, and debt. While AI does not replace professional financial advice, it serves as a valuable additional tool and, honestly, one of the most comprehensive solutions I have found. It significantly simplifies the tedious management of my finances. I have tried other apps in the past that promised the same thing, but they did not work with half of my accounts and lacked the ability to integrate additional context through conversation and use AI to process questions and provide assistance.
I am currently very impressed with ChatGPT Finances - the setup process via Plaid, the dashboard, the ability to use AI for financial planning, all of it. While I am wary of potential privacy and security risks, I have done my best to lock everything down in the settings to continue using ChatGPT Finances without worry.
