Understanding Claude's Effort Levels
The concept of effort level in Claude is essential for effectively managing token consumption. This parameter, which is not a strict token budget, influences the AI's behavior: a high level enhances the quality of responses for complex tasks but increases response time and credit consumption. Conversely, a low level favors speed and reduces resource usage.
In the Claude application, five effort levels are available through the model selector:
- Low: Ideal for simple queries where speed is a priority.
- Medium: Offers a balance between speed and quality.
- High: Default level, suitable for most use cases.
- Extra: For more demanding tasks.
- Max: For the most complex problems requiring deep thinking.
A “Thinking” button also allows for extended reasoning for particularly complex tasks.
How to Adjust the Effort Level in Claude
To modify the effort level, just a few clicks in the Claude interface are needed. Under the input area for the query, click on the model name (for example, Opus 4.8). In the menu that appears, select the Effort option and choose the desired level from Low, Medium, High, Extra, or Max.
The selected level will then be displayed next to the model name, allowing for a quick check of the current setting. The same menu provides access to the Thinking button, to enable or disable extended reasoning.
Saving Tokens with the Right Effort Level
To optimize token usage, it is crucial to adjust the effort level to the actual complexity of the task. For simple tasks like rephrasing or factual questions, Low or Medium levels are sufficient and help preserve credits. The High level, by default, is suitable for most professional uses. The Extra and Max levels should be reserved for tasks requiring in-depth analysis, complex coding, or multi-step reasoning.
Judicious Use of the Max Level
The Max level is particularly token-hungry and can significantly lengthen response times, quickly reaching usage limits. Anthropic recommends using it only for the most difficult tasks, rather than enabling it by default. This setting is part of a broader token management strategy, including choosing the appropriate model and opening new discussion threads for each topic, as detailed in our tips for saving tokens.
