Transferring Memories and Chats to Gemini
Google has recently introduced an innovative feature for its artificial intelligence, Gemini, which allows users to transfer their memories, chat histories, and preferences from other AIs, including ChatGPT and Claude. This advancement aims to facilitate the transition to Gemini without users having to start from scratch, personalizing the AI's responses based on the history and preferences already established.
Starting with a new generative AI service can be challenging, as the bot has no prior information about the user, limiting its ability to customize its responses. Google has therefore proposed a solution to this problem by allowing the transfer of personal information from one AI to another.
Memory Import Feature
Gemini's new memory import feature enables users to transfer memories, chat histories, and preferences from other AI services. Google explained in a blog post that this feature can easily integrate an understanding of users' key preferences, relationships, and personal context directly into Gemini. Once these memories are imported, Gemini can understand the same key facts shared with other applications, such as personal interests, a family member's name, or the place of residence. This saves users from having to start over and allows Gemini to quickly get up to speed on the information that matters most to them.
Google stated: "Our new memory import feature can easily bring an understanding of your key preferences, relationships, and personal context directly into Gemini. Once you have imported these memories, Gemini will understand the same key facts you have shared with other applications, such as your interests, your sibling's name, or where you grew up. Instead of starting from scratch, you can quickly bring Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you."
Terms of Use for the Feature
This feature is available for both free and paid Gemini accounts, but it is limited to personal accounts. Business, school, or supervised accounts cannot use this option. Additionally, it is accessible globally, except in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area. Users must be at least 18 years old and have another AI service with recorded memories to use this feature.
Procedure to Try the Feature
To try this feature, users need to go to the Gemini memory import page and click the "Get Started" button. Alternatively, they can log into the Gemini web page, select "Settings" at the bottom of the left sidebar, and then choose "Import Memory into Gemini." The first step is to copy a specific prompt and submit it to the other AI service. This prompt asks the AI to review past conversations and summarize the known information about the user.
The prompt requests avoiding the use of first and second-person pronouns, referring to the user instead as "the user" or using neutral phrasing. The information should be organized into categories such as demographic information, interests and preferences, relationships, dated events and projects, as well as specific instructions given to the AI.
Here is the text to use for the prompt:
You are helping me import the context from one AI assistant to another. Your task is to review our past conversations and summarize what you know about me.
In the output, please avoid using first-person pronouns (I, my, me, mine) and second-person pronouns (you, your, yours). Instead, refer to the individual you have come to know as "the user" or use neutral phrasing.
Preserve the user's words as much as possible, especially for instructions and preferences.
Categories (output in this order):
1. Demographic information: preferred names, occupation, education, and general residence.
2. Interests and preferences: active and sustained engagements (not just owning an item or a one-time purchase).
3. Relationships: confirmed and sustained relationships.
4. Dated events, projects, and plans: a log of significant and recent activities.
5. Instructions: rules I have explicitly requested to follow in the future, "always do X," "never do Y," and corrections to your behavior. Include only the rules from stored memories, not from conversations.
Format:
Divide the content into labeled sections using the categories above. Try to include verbatim quotes from my prompts that justify each entry. Structure each entry using this format:
The user's name is <name>.
- Evidence: The user said "call me <name>." Date: [YYYY-MM-DD].
Output:
- Format the final summary output as a block of text.
After copying and pasting this prompt into the other AI, it will generate a response. Copy this response, return to Gemini, and paste it into the window of step 2. Click the "Add Memory" button, and Gemini will incorporate all the data and details into its own memory. Google's AI should also welcome you to the service by referencing some of your personal information.
Transferring Past Conversations
In addition to transferring memories, users can also transfer their past conversations. To do this in ChatGPT, they need to select their username at the bottom left, click on "Settings," then "Data Controls." Next, they should click "Export" next to "Export Data" and confirm the export. For Claude AI, users need to click on their username at the bottom left, select "Settings," then "Privacy." They can choose to export all previous discussions or only those from the last 30 or 90 days.
Once the export is confirmed, users will receive an email containing a button or link to download the exported data, which will be stored as a ZIP archive. They then need to return to the Gemini import page and click the "Add" button under "Import Discussions" to select the downloaded export. The previous conversations from the other AI will then appear in Gemini.
Managing Memories and Conversations
After importing memories and conversations, users have the option to delete specific conversations they do not wish to keep in Gemini. To do this, they can hover over the specific discussion in the left sidebar, click on the three-dot icon, and select "Delete." They can also delete certain memories and other information by logging into their Gemini app activity page and clicking the cross next to any item they wish to remove.
For more information on Gemini's memory import option, users can refer to Google's help page on the feature and the FAQ at the bottom of the memory import page.
