Proton Enhances Password Security with AI Access Tokens
Proton, known for its digital security solutions, has recently enriched its password manager with an innovative feature. This new addition is specifically designed for AI agents, utilizing access tokens. These tokens allow for targeted, temporary, and traceable sharing of credentials, while avoiding the transmission of sensitive information in plain text.
Increased Control and Enhanced Traceability
Traditionally, most applications are developed for human users and do not take into account AI agents that operate through programmatic interfaces. The MCP protocol (Model Context Protocol) is a standard that enables these agents to communicate with third-party services or command-line tools. However, sharing access in this context often involves transmitting credentials in plain text, without control or traceability. Proton aims to eliminate this risk with its new feature.
Proton has implemented a system of access tokens that are generated directly from the settings of Proton Pass. The user can choose the "vaults" they wish to share and copy the configuration instructions into their AI agent. This agent then obtains read-only access, meaning it can view the data but cannot modify it or create new entries. The access scope is thus strictly limited to what is necessary.
Traceability and User Control
To ensure optimal traceability, Proton Pass integrates an event log. Each use of a token is recorded in an audit log, with a reason justifying the access. This allows the user to maintain complete visibility over the actions performed by their agent. Additionally, the user has the option to set an expiration duration for each token, ranging from one hour to one year, and to revoke it at any time if necessary.
Diverse Applications for Tokens
Access tokens can be used in various scenarios, such as consulting a bank statement to analyze monthly expenses, extracting data from a fitness tracker to create a weekly report, or preparing a summary of customer interactions before a call. Furthermore, these tokens can also be used outside of AI agents to power custom scripts via Pass CLI, Proton Pass's command-line interface.
Availability and Accessibility
This new feature is available at no additional cost for paying users under the Pass Plus subscriptions (included in Proton Unlimited), Pass Family, Pass Professional, and Proton Workspace. This allows users to benefit from enhanced security without extra costs, thereby strengthening trust in Proton's solutions.
