Databricks Strengthens Its Acquisition Strategy

Databricks, bolstered by a recent $5 billion funding round completed last month, is actively positioning itself in the acquisition market. This financial windfall, combined with already substantial revenues, enables the company to embark on a series of strategic investments.

Launch of Lakewatch: An Innovative Security Product

The company has unveiled a new security product named Lakewatch. This product leverages Databricks' ability to manage vast volumes of data, incorporating features typical of Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems. Lakewatch stands out for its use of artificial intelligence agents powered by Claude, a technology developed by Anthropic, to detect and analyze threats.

Acquisition of Antimatter and SiftD.ai

To support the development of Lakewatch, Databricks has acquired two startups: Antimatter and SiftD.ai. The acquisition of Antimatter, finalized last year, had not been publicly disclosed until now. As for SiftD.ai, the deal was recently concluded and finalized this Monday, according to information provided by Databricks to TechCrunch.

Financial and Strategic Details

The financial details of these acquisitions have not been disclosed. Antimatter, founded by Andrew Krioukov, raised $12 million in 2022, with support from New Enterprise Associates, according to Pitchbook. In contrast, SiftD.ai, a still-young startup, had no known funding rounds.

Profiles of the Acquired Startups

SiftD.ai, which had only launched its product in November, offered an interactive notebook similar to a Jupyter notebook, designed to facilitate collaboration between humans and agents. Steve Zhang, co-founder and CEO of SiftD.ai, was previously the chief scientist at Splunk, where he contributed to the development of the Search Processing Language.

Integration of Teams and Technologies

The acquisitions involve small teams: SiftD.ai had only a few employees, while Antimatter had fewer than 50. Databricks appears to have conducted an acquihire with SiftD.ai, while with Antimatter, the company likely acquired key technologies. Andrew Krioukov showcased Antimatter's technology at the RSA Innovation Sandbox Contest in 2024, highlighting a data control plan tool.

A Continuous Acquisition Strategy

Although Databricks did not specify the number of employees integrated, it confirmed that the teams from the startups have joined its ranks. Andrew Krioukov, now at Databricks for several months, leads the team responsible for Lakewatch. When asked about its future intentions, Databricks indicated that it continues to monitor the market to identify new acquisition opportunities to meet the evolving needs of its clients.
