DeepL Restructures Its Workforce to Face the AI Era

The translation startup DeepL has announced a significant reduction in its workforce, laying off 250 employees. This decision is part of a reorganization strategy aimed at maintaining its competitiveness in the artificial intelligence sector. Jarek Kutylowski, CEO and founder of DeepL, described this move as a "deliberate structural choice" to ensure that the company remains a global leader in the field of AI.

DeepL, which employs over 1,000 people worldwide, was founded in 2017 and is based in Cologne. Its investors include ICONIQ Growth, Teachers’ Venture Growth, IVP, Atomico, and WiL. In 2024, the startup successfully raised $300 million, achieving a valuation of $2 billion.

Kutylowski explained that this workforce reduction results from a thorough analysis conducted by the management team to determine the best way to operate the company in the AI era. "This means transforming the way DeepL operates from within, with AI integrated at every level of our functioning," he specified.

Innovations and New Directions

DeepL is not content with its traditional translation services. Last year, the company launched an AI agent, called the "DeepL agent," to expand its scope beyond simple translation. Additionally, DeepL is currently developing a real-time voice translation tool. To successfully carry out this project, the company has recruited the team from Mixalo, an American startup specializing in audio streaming.

Kutylowski emphasized the importance of acting before the change becomes evident to everyone in the market. This proactive approach aims to position DeepL at the forefront of the innovation race in the field of artificial intelligence.
