Qualcomm: A Key Player in Smartphones Turning to AI
Qualcomm, widely recognized for its components in the smartphone sector, is now looking to establish itself in the field of artificial intelligence. If you own an Android smartphone, it is highly likely that it is equipped with a Qualcomm processor. Even iPhones sometimes use this company's modems to connect to 5G. While Qualcomm has thrived on the rise of smartphones, it is preparing to play a major role in AI. The company offers chips that allow manufacturers to integrate AI features directly into their devices.
For example, Qualcomm could see its sales increase thanks to the integration of its chips into Gemini Intelligence, Google's new AI assistant unveiled in May. Additionally, Qualcomm could provide components for OpenAI's future smartphone, the company behind ChatGPT. Furthermore, the company could generate substantial revenue from data centers dedicated to AI.
A Potential Deal with Bytedance for AI Chips
According to sources close to the matter, Qualcomm has already reached an agreement with Bytedance, the creator of TikTok, to supply AI chips for its data centers. Bytedance plans to purchase millions of these chips to support its development in artificial intelligence. As long as the computing power of these chips does not exceed a certain threshold, Qualcomm could export them to China, where they would be used by companies like Bytedance. The market looks promising, especially since Bytedance plans to invest billions of dollars in AI infrastructure.
Qualcomm Facing Competition from Nvidia and Others
For now, these reports have not been confirmed by Qualcomm or Bytedance, but they position Qualcomm as a potential competitor to Nvidia in the AI chip market. During its quarterly earnings presentation in April, Qualcomm mentioned discussions with potential clients, which piqued investors' interest. Qualcomm's stock actually rose on Tuesday following the publication of the Bloomberg article and has increased by 30% since the beginning of the year.
In addition to the possibility of supplying chips for OpenAI's future smartphone, Wall Street remains optimistic about selling chips to companies heavily investing in new data centers. While Nvidia currently dominates the AI chip market, competitors such as Google, Broadcom, and AMD are beginning to emerge. Qualcomm seems eager to join this list of challengers. Details about Qualcomm's projects in the AI sector may be revealed during its upcoming quarterly earnings presentation.
