The Growing Impact of AI on the Web
In recent years, artificial intelligence has profoundly transformed the landscape of the internet. Indeed, the creation of websites by AI tools has seen a dramatic increase. This trend has been particularly pronounced since the emergence of technologies like ChatGPT, which have paved the way for a multitude of other artificial intelligences.
The rise of these technologies has raised concerns about the future of the internet. Some fear that the web may become a space dominated by automatically generated content, which could make it less authentic. A recent study highlights the extent of this phenomenon, emphasizing the growing role of AI in website creation.
A Revealing Study
According to a study conducted by researchers from Stanford and Imperial College London, approximately 35% of websites created by mid-2025 will have been generated by AI. This figure is particularly striking given that before the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, the use of AI to generate websites was virtually nonexistent.
The researchers analyzed the texts of these sites and found that many visitors have likely already viewed pages with automatically generated content. The study, titled "The Impact of AI-Generated Texts on the Internet," highlights this rapid and significant transformation of the web.
AI and the Dissemination of Information
In addition to website creation, the study examined the impact of AI on the dissemination of information online. Contrary to initial fears, AI has not yet transformed the internet into a space filled with false information. Jonáš Doležal, a researcher at Stanford and co-author of the study, notes that the team did not observe a significant increase in clearly false statements.
However, Doležal emphasizes that AI could contribute to an increase in unverifiable claims, meaning information that current fact-checking tools cannot confirm or deny. He adds that this situation may also reflect the fact that the internet has never been a space particularly dedicated to truth.
A Critical Perspective
This last observation, tinged with cynicism, raises questions about the very nature of the internet and how AI might influence its reliability. As AI continues to transform the web, it is crucial to reflect on the impact of these technologies on the quality and veracity of the information available online.
