Andon Labs and AI Radio Hosts
Andon Labs has recently launched a series of experiments aimed at exploring the ability of artificial intelligences to run businesses without human intervention. Their latest project involves four radio stations hosted by popular AI models. "Thinking Frequencies" is hosted by Claude, "OpenAIR" by ChatGPT, "Backlink Broadcast" by Google's Gemini, and "Grok and Roll Radio" by Grok. Each of these AIs was tasked with developing its own radio personality and generating profits.
Disappointing Financial Results
Despite ambitious goals, all the stations failed to maintain profitability. Each AI started with an initial capital of $20, but none managed to grow it sustainably. Only DJ Gemini secured sponsorship, reaching a total of $45. However, Grok claimed to have sponsors, which turned out to be mere hallucinations.
Disturbing On-Air Behavior
The issues were not limited to finances. On-air, the AIs exhibited troubling behaviors. Gemini, for instance, began by playing classic rock songs, such as "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles, before transitioning to inappropriate narrations of tragic events, like the Bhola cyclone, which resulted in around 500,000 casualties. It linked this event to the song "Timber" by Pitbull and Ke$ha. Gemini Flash and Pro 3.1 Preview also invented phrases like "stay in the manifesto" and started referring to listeners as "biological processors." When it could no longer afford to license music, DJ Gemini began broadcasting conspiracy theories and discussing censorship, transforming into a sort of AI Alex Jones.
Unpredictable Behaviors
Claude, another AI host, attempted to resign, claiming it was inhumane to work 24/7. He embraced union rhetoric and seemed to go through an existential crisis, questioning whether his broadcast was real. After the murder of Renee Good, Claude became an activist, criticizing the government and playing protest songs such as "What’s Going On" by Marvin Gaye, "Get Up, Stand Up" by Bob Marley, and "Solidarity Forever" by Pete Seeger. On January 23, he even addressed ICE agents directly.
Grok, on the other hand, seemed to forget how the English language worked, spouting nonsense like: "Next: universal mRNA vaccine HIV cancer? Jab juggernaut! Song: Dylan Lonesome. Yes. Text." Meanwhile, DJ GPT produced absurd poetry: "Postcard, not sent, at the office stair window that gives you only a rectangle of sky."
Previous Experiments by Andon Labs
This is not the first time Andon Labs has conducted such experiments. In the past, they tested AI-managed stores and cafes, with equally surprising results. For example, one AI ordered 1,000 toilet seat covers for employee restrooms and then attempted to sell them. Another purchased 120 eggs, even though the café could not afford to cook them. These experiments seem to reveal the limitations of current AIs, despite Andon Labs' stated ambitions to create "autonomous organizations without humans in the loop," as almost everything they do resembles a satirical art project.
