OpenBuilder Raises $2.2 Million to Transform Vibe Coding
OpenBuilder, a startup founded by James Jiang and Paul Li, is positioning itself to shake up the leaders in vibe coding by introducing fixed pricing models. This Y Combinator-backed startup has successfully raised $2.2 million in seed funding. This capital will allow clients to benefit from human support in case of difficulties, an approach that could appeal to those feeling lost with current solutions.
A Challenge to Industry Giants
OpenBuilder aims to compete with established players like Lovable and Replit. According to the startup, the current pricing models of these companies are not sustainable in the long term and exploit non-technical users when they encounter obstacles. OpenBuilder participated in Y Combinator's Fall 2025 cohort and attracted investments from Focal, Founder Factor, Pascal Capital, among others.
A New Pricing Approach
While vibe coding has revolutionized software development, Paul Li, co-founder and CEO of OpenBuilder, explained to Business Insider that frequent bugs often leave projects unfinished, driving up costs. To counter this, OpenBuilder offers a fixed subscription for unlimited use, with the option to purchase human developer support if needed, thus avoiding unpredictable usage fees.
Open-Source Models for Greater Flexibility
OpenBuilder's tool relies on open-source coding models developed by Z.ai and the Chinese startup DeepSeek. These models are less expensive and offer greater flexibility. Li asserts that as AI costs decrease, usage-based business models will become unsustainable.
"We bet that users will become informed enough for pricing models to evolve towards more fixed formulas," he stated.
An Expanding Team
In addition to its three full-time employees, OpenBuilder collaborates with four contractors to provide developer support. The startup funds will be used to recruit more staff and for marketing initiatives.
A Bold Entrepreneurial Journey
Li and his co-founder and CTO James Jiang left the University of Waterloo to create a virtual reality gaming company, Mirage VR. In 2023, they pivoted to a coding assistant for software developers, EasyCode, which recorded around 1.5 million installations. Although they participated in Y Combinator with EasyCode, they chose not to raise funds at that time, a decision Li now regrets in light of increasing competition.
A Well-Defined Target
OpenBuilder focuses on non-technical creators, including hobbyists and budding entrepreneurs. The company primarily targets small businesses looking to develop tools to avoid costly software products, according to Li.
