Disneyland Paris Integrates AI with Olaf, the Steam Deck-Controlled Robot
At Disneyland Paris, technological innovation takes on a new dimension with the arrival of Olaf, an AI robot inspired by the iconic character from Frozen. This robot, embodying Disney magic, is controlled by a Steam Deck, a surprising choice that highlights the evolution of entertainment technologies.
Starting from March 29, 2026, Olaf will be showcased as an AI robot capable of moving and interacting with visitors during live shows. This advancement is the result of a collaboration between Disney, NVIDIA, and artificial intelligence experts, with the Steam Deck serving as an innovative remote control.
An Advanced AI Robot but Under Human Control
Olaf stands out for its ability to move without being limited by tracks or cables. Thanks to an NVIDIA Jetson chip, it can move freely, adjust its movements, animate its face, and give the impression of a true presence. This technology differentiates it from traditional animatronics.
However, Olaf is not fully autonomous. A human operator uses a Steam Deck running Windows to control its actions in real time. This system allows for greater flexibility and responsiveness compared to traditional industrial systems, combining the motor capabilities of AI with human supervision for a harmonious interaction.
A Live Show Thanks to Technology
The development of Olaf has been accelerated by advanced technological tools. Using the open-source framework Newton and the Kamino simulator, teams were able to train thousands of virtual versions of the robot simultaneously. Up to 8,000 Olafs were tested in parallel to perfect their movements and balance. The use of Omniverse technology was also crucial for Olaf's simulation training, allowing it to learn to walk and interact even before physically existing.
This simulation process achieved in a few hours what would have taken months under real conditions. Reinforcement learning enabled Olaf to navigate complex environments, such as a moving boat in the bay of Arendelle.
Integrated into the Celebration in Arendelle show, a daily event at the heart of the new Disney Adventure World, Olaf interacts with visitors, responds via pre-recorded lines, and adapts to the rhythm of the show. This spectacle is the result of a two billion euro investment. The real-time intervention of the operator via the Steam Deck is crucial for maintaining the illusion and avoiding errors.
The Future of Robotics at Disney
Olaf is just the beginning of a new era for Disney. This AI robot is a prototype that foreshadows the arrival of new robotic characters in Disney parks and cruises.
NVIDIA is developing world models that will enable robots to better understand their environment and make autonomous decisions. If these technologies come to fruition, the role of the operator could be reduced, paving the way for even more personalized and immersive experiences.
Through its strategy for Adventure World, Disney is betting on these innovations to transform the visitor experience. Olaf, while not a revolutionary autonomous robot, represents a significant advancement in the use of AI and robotics, combining cutting-edge technology and human interaction to create new magic.
