After nearly 17 years of service at Microsoft, Eric Boyd left the company last week to join Anthropic, where he will lead the infrastructure team. This transition marks a significant turning point in his career as he prepares to play a central role in the development of Anthropic's capabilities.
Eric Boyd expressed his enthusiasm for this new challenge on LinkedIn, stating: “I have had the privilege of closely following the meteoric rise of LLMs, and the Anthropic team is truly exceptional. The combination of leading models and a company culture fully committed to its mission is a real source of inspiration, and I am eager to fully invest myself in it.”
He also highlighted the phenomenal speed at which AI is evolving, particularly the influence of Claude Code over the past six months, especially the last two, which perfectly illustrates the extent of its capabilities. According to Boyd, making this power accessible to everyone will be crucial, and he sees Anthropic as the best place to contribute to that effort.
Eric Boyd's Journey
Eric Boyd joined Microsoft in 2009 in Redmond, Washington, where he initially oversaw the development of Bing Ads. In 2015, he was promoted to president of the AI platform, before being appointed in 2018 by CEO Satya Nadella to lead the Azure AI team. In this role, Boyd oversaw the development of Microsoft’s large language models and the planning of the AI compute clusters used by OpenAI, thus solidifying Microsoft’s position as a key player in AI cloud.
Boyd described this period as “the beginning of the most exciting chapter of my career,” emphasizing the importance of making large language models accessible to the world through Microsoft Foundry and the Azure OpenAI service. He also expressed gratitude for the past three years, which he called extraordinary.
Before his time at Microsoft, Boyd worked for nearly nine years at Yahoo, where he was vice president of platform engineering. He left Yahoo in 2008, according to his LinkedIn profile.
A Strategic Role at Anthropic
At Anthropic, Boyd is tasked with leading the company's infrastructure, a role that goes beyond mere administrative functions. He is there to evolve the systems that allow Anthropic to host, deploy, and operate its models at a very large scale.
Rahul Patil, Chief Technology Officer of Anthropic, explained on LinkedIn that Boyd will leverage his experience with infrastructure for foundational models. This hiring comes as Anthropic ramps up its recruitment of experienced cloud executives. According to The Information, the startup is in discussions to secure over 10 GW of capacity in the coming years.
Anthropic recently signed an agreement with Google and Broadcom for the development or leasing of 3.5 GW of TPU, with commissioning expected to begin in 2027.
Financially, in February 2026, the parent company of Claude raised $30 billion in a Series G funding round, bringing its valuation to $380 billion. This funding, led by GIC and Coatue, also received investments from Microsoft and Nvidia as part of the initially promised $15 billion. Anthropic clarified that its annual recurring revenue had reached $30 billion, up from about $9 billion at the end of 2025.
