Samsung Exynos 1680: A Technological Leap for Mid-Range

Samsung, the South Korean tech giant, has recently unveiled its latest innovation in mid-range smartphone processors. The new chip, named Exynos 1680, is manufactured using 4 nm process technology, representing a significant leap in computing power, graphics capabilities, and artificial intelligence compared to its predecessors.

The Exynos 1680 succeeds the Exynos 1580, launched the previous year, and benefits from an improved 4 nm manufacturing process, likely the SF4X developed by Samsung Foundry. This technological advancement translates into increased energy efficiency and enhanced performance. The processor is set to power the upcoming Galaxy A57, recently announced alongside the A37 model. Notable improvements include a rethought CPU architecture, a more powerful GPU, an enhanced NPU for artificial intelligence, as well as a suite of modern features covering memory, photography, and connectivity.

Enhanced Performance with the Exynos 1680

The Exynos 1680 stands out with the integration of five high-performance cores, a rare feature for this category of chips. The main core, a Cortex-A720, can reach a frequency of 2.9 GHz, while four other cores of the same type are clocked at 2.6 GHz. For less demanding tasks, three Cortex-A520 cores, operating at 1.95 GHz, take over.

In terms of graphics, Samsung has integrated the Xclipse 550 GPU, based on AMD's RDNA 3 architecture. This update includes new compute and rendering units, allowing for a graphical performance improvement of up to 15% compared to the previous generation. The chip is capable of handling Full HD+ displays with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz.

The neural processing unit (NPU) has also been improved, reaching 19.6 TOPS, which represents a 33% increase compared to the Exynos 1580. This significantly enhances the chip's artificial intelligence capabilities.

Cutting-Edge Equipment in Memory, Photography, and Connectivity

The Exynos 1680 SoC is compatible with LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.1 storage, standards typically reserved for high-end chips like the Exynos 2600 or Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. These features improve loading times, streamline multitasking, and accelerate photo and video content processing.

The image signal processor (ISP) has also been enhanced, offering better detail levels, more accurate color rendering, and improved contrast. Noise management in low-light conditions has been optimized compared to the previous generation. The platform supports sensors of up to 200 megapixels, as well as 4K video recording at 60 frames per second, with HDR 10-bit for both photo and video.

In terms of connectivity, the integrated 5G modem allows for download speeds of up to 5.1 Gbit/s and upload speeds of 1.28 Gbit/s on sub-6 GHz networks. In 4G LTE, speeds can reach 1.2 Gbit/s for downloads and 211 Mbit/s for uploads. The Exynos 1680 is the first chip in the lineup to support Bluetooth 6.1. It is also equipped with GPS compatible with other GNSS systems, Wi-Fi 6E, NFC, and USB 2.0 Type-C, thus meeting current needs without compromise.
