The Return of Fable 5 and the Importance of Backup Plans
Anthropic has recently restored access to Fable 5, an artificial intelligence model, after the White House decided to suspend access for foreign users last month. Sean McDonnell, a UK-based entrepreneur, was directly affected by this interruption while working with the model. Now that access has been restored, McDonnell emphasizes the crucial importance of having backup plans to mitigate potential interruptions of AI tools.
Preparation and Limited Impact
Last month, just as Sean McDonnell had begun using Anthropic's Fable model for his projects, a sudden decision by the U.S. government forced the cutoff of foreign access to Fable 5. Fortunately for McDonnell, he had anticipated such a situation and set up a backup plan. As a result, the impact on his web design business and his SaaS site, launched earlier this year, was limited.
In a small team like his, AI tools are essential for enhancing services. However, this incident served as a powerful reminder of the need to have not just a plan B, but also a plan C, to ensure operational continuity in the event of an AI failure.
The Importance of Documentation
A common mistake is to rely entirely on AI tools without planning for alternatives. When access to Fable was restored, McDonnell and his team took steps to prepare for a potential future interruption. They ensured that everything was backed up in the form of Claude Skill, allowing other reference models to access an overview of their codebase.
This approach guarantees that even if access to Fable is withdrawn again, the team can continue to work effectively. Continuous documentation of developments is crucial for conveying details to a developer, even in the absence of the primary AI tool.
Enhancing Workflows
The goal is to enhance, not replace, existing workflows with AI. During the first interruption of Fable, McDonnell already had a backup plan in place. In the past, using Claude's Opus 4.6, they had encountered issues when the tool quickly reached its token limit, leaving their codebase incomplete.
This experience allowed them to be better prepared for using Fable. Before the cutoff of foreign access, McDonnell had asked Fable to create a guide that other AI models could follow. This enabled the transfer of remaining tasks to other agents, such as Codex and Claude 4.8, thereby minimizing potential work losses.
Communication and Preparation
McDonnell hopes that if a similar situation arises again, communication from AI companies will improve. A heads-up would have been beneficial, although understandable if security concerns were at play. Companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, as well as smaller businesses that rely on AI, must always be ready to face interruptions.
A smoother transition would have been preferable, rather than seeing a model withdrawn without warning. Even a simple message explaining the situation within their applications would have been helpful for users.
