Figure AI: A $39 Billion Startup in Search of Performance
Figure AI, a robotics company valued at $39 billion, recently staged an unprecedented competition between one of its humanoid robots and a human intern, Aimé Gérard. This 10-hour parcel sorting challenge tested the capabilities of artificial intelligence against human ingenuity. Gérard, a visualization specialist, managed to sort 192 more parcels than the robot, despite the breaks mandated by California law.
A Captivating Show for Millions of Viewers
For nearly a week, Figure AI has been live-streaming the performances of its robots from its headquarters in San Jose. These machines, tasked with placing parcels barcode-side down on a conveyor belt, have accumulated over 120 hours of sorting, captivating millions of viewers. The livestream quickly gained popularity, reaching over 1.5 million views on X after just eight hours.
The Competition Unfolds
The competition saw Aimé Gérard face off against one of Figure AI's robots in a parcel sorting marathon. Although Gérard had to take breaks for regulatory reasons, he maintained a steady pace, sorting a total of 12,924 parcels. With an average of 2.79 seconds per parcel, he slightly outperformed the robot, which had an average of 2.83 seconds. Despite blisters on his hands, Gérard persevered until the end of the 10 hours, demonstrating human resilience in the face of technology.
Figure AI's Ambitions
Figure AI uses these demonstrations to prove the reliability and endurance of its robots over long periods. After 24 hours of continuous operation, the humanoids had sorted over 30,000 parcels, and the livestream had amassed over 3 million views. The company's founder, Brett Adcock, announced that the livestream will continue until the robots fail, highlighting Figure AI's determination to showcase its machines' ability to work without interruption.
Technological Challenges to Overcome
Despite these impressive performances, accuracy issues remain. The robots sometimes place parcels barcode-side up or tip them off the conveyor belt, compromising the efficiency of the process. Ayanna Howard, a roboticist and dean of the College of Engineering at Ohio State University, commented that the technology is not yet ready for deployment in logistics centers due to these precision problems.
Towards a Robotic Future
Figure AI continues to promote its robots, hoping to one day achieve a level of autonomy sufficient for integration into logistics centers. Founder Brett Adcock remains optimistic, asserting that this type of human victory may soon be a thing of the past. In the meantime, viewers describe the livestream as "surprisingly addictive" and "robotic ASMR," and the company has even started selling merchandise featuring its parcel-sorting humanoids.
