Ford has recently made the strategic decision to rehire 350 experienced engineers, some of whom had previously worked for the company and others coming from suppliers. This initiative comes after the use of artificial intelligence and automated systems failed to meet the quality standards expected by the automaker.
Kumar Galhotra, Ford's Chief Operating Officer, explained to reporters that the company had relied on automated quality systems, but the results did not meet expectations. In response, Ford has opted to bring in technical specialists capable of identifying failure points before parts are sent to the shop.
Charles Poon, Vice President of Vehicle Hardware Engineering at Ford, acknowledged that the company had overestimated the effectiveness of AI, believing it could, on its own, ensure a high-quality product. However, Ford is not abandoning its AI projects. The rehired engineers, nicknamed "gray beards," are now tasked with training younger staff and reprogramming AI tools.
This strategy seems to be already paying off. Ford anticipates a cost reduction of $1 billion for the current year. Additionally, the automaker was recently ranked at the top among mass-market brands in JD Power's Initial Quality Survey, published this week.
