Garfield: When AI Takes Over English Courts
Garfield, an innovative law firm utilizing artificial intelligence, has recently made headlines by helping a freelancer win a legal case in England. This freelancer used Garfield's software to draft a legal letter in an attempt to recover unpaid fees. Garfield is part of a new wave of startups leveraging technology to democratize access to legal services.
An English court recently ruled in favor of Garfield, a firm that prioritizes the use of artificial intelligence to manage legal claims. Thanks to this technology, a freelancer was able to recover £7,000 in unpaid fees from a former client after a trial at the Wandsworth court in May. Although the case may seem modest, its implications are significant. Garfield claims to be the first robotic law firm to win a trial in England.
Software Serving Justice
The software developed by Garfield allows users to pursue unpaid debts by uploading documents such as contracts and invoices. It then generates legal letters and court documents. Philip Young, the founder of Garfield and an experienced lawyer, explains that the company focuses on small claims because they are common, problematic, and often costly to resolve through traditional means.
Young emphasizes that it is not cost-effective to spend a lot of money on lawyers to recover a debt of £4,000. This approach helps reduce costs while making legal services more accessible.
A Case in Point
In this case, Tamires Camal Taquidir, a human resources consultant, had not been paid for her work with a hospitality company. According to Young, she initially owed about £6,000. In response to her claim, the defendant denied any debt and even filed a counterclaim of £1,500, likely to deter her from pursuing the case or to reduce her demands.
However, Camal Taquidir stood her ground, convinced of the validity of her claim. Garfield prepared the necessary documents for the trial, and a human lawyer represented Camal Taquidir in court. She paid about £400 to Garfield for its services. After the hearing, the judge issued a decision a few weeks later, accepting her claim and dismissing the counterclaim. Young described the outcome as "very satisfactory" for both Camal Taquidir and Garfield.
A Success That Draws Attention
The ruling has sparked significant interest in Garfield. Young reported that visits to the company's website surged by 1,000% after articles about the case were published by the Financial Times and The Guardian.
Garfield has already handled over 600 claims, recovering approximately £500,000 for its clients. Young noted that the use of the platform has increased over the past six months, with initial users giving way to larger businesses and even a regulator in England utilizing the platform.
A Vision for the Future of Legal Services
Philip Young began his career at Baker McKenzie before founding his own firm, Cooke, Young & Keidan. After leaving this London firm, he started experimenting with ChatGPT during a family trip, convinced that technology would transform the delivery of legal services.
Last May, Garfield became the first regulated law firm of its kind to be approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the regulatory body for solicitors in England and Wales. National rules allow non-lawyers to own or invest in law firms, paving the way for external investments.
However, Young clarified that Garfield has not raised institutional capital. So far, the company has been funded by himself and close friends. The idea for Garfield was partly inspired by his brother-in-law, a plumber from South Yorkshire, who would call him when clients failed to pay.
Young stated, "In England, we have a choice. Either we develop solutions to fill the gaps in access to justice, or we rearrange things so that every plumber has a brother who happens to be a litigation partner."
