Google Facilitates the Transition to Gemini
Google has recently introduced a new feature for its conversational assistant, Gemini, which allows users to easily transfer their data from other popular chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude. This advancement aims to simplify the switch to Gemini without losing the valuable history of accumulated conversations. Indeed, Gemini now offers the ability to import chat history, which represents a significant advantage for users looking to change platforms.
User loyalty to a chatbot is often tied to the history of interactions they have accumulated over time. While ChatGPT has been a pioneer in this field, other services like Gemini and Claude have gradually enhanced their offerings. However, data transfer remained a major obstacle. Google has therefore decided to eliminate this barrier by deploying a tool that allows users to import both memory and conversations from other services, thus facilitating the transition to Gemini.
Two Methods to Import Data into Gemini
The import process to Gemini is not automatic and requires manual intervention in two distinct steps.
-
First Method: This option allows users to transfer only their memory. The user must first ask their current chatbot to provide a complete summary of the saved information using a specific prompt. Once this response is obtained, it must be copied and pasted into Gemini via the app's settings, in the section dedicated to memory import. By clicking on "Add Memory," the data is saved, and a new conversation opens to confirm the backup in the user's Google account.
-
Second Option: This method allows users to import the entire conversation history. To do this, the user must generate a ZIP file, with a maximum size of 5 GB, from the original service. For example, for ChatGPT, one must access the settings, select "Data Controls," then "Export Data," and confirm the operation. The ZIP file created must then be uploaded to the Gemini import page. Although the procedure may vary slightly between platforms, the principle remains the same.
A Unification of Memory and History
With this update, Google has also decided to rename the "Past Conversations" section to "Memory." This change in terminology aims to better reflect the integration of historical data and information retained by the assistant. This new name is expected to gradually appear in the user interface over the coming weeks.
The goal of this import tool is to facilitate the transition of users from other services like ChatGPT or Claude to Gemini. By allowing users to retain their data without starting from scratch, Google hopes to attract more users to its platform, thereby strengthening its position in the conversational assistant market.
