Google has recently intensified its strategy to promote its AI assistant, Gemini, by introducing two new migration tools. Announced on March 26, these tools aim to facilitate the transition for users from other popular AI assistants, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.
The first tool offered by Google allows users to import their memory. It works by generating a prompt that the user must copy into the original AI. This action produces a summary of accumulated preferences and context, which the user can then paste into Gemini to personalize their experience.
The second tool goes further by offering the ability to import the complete conversation history. Users can download these discussions as ZIP files, which can then be uploaded to Gemini. Once imported, these conversations are accessible and can be continued directly within the app. Google has set a limit of five ZIP files per day, with each file not exceeding 5 GB. Google's help page specifically details how to import histories from ChatGPT and Claude.
However, these migration tools come with geographical and usage restrictions. They are only available for personal Google accounts and do not work for business or school accounts. Additionally, these features are not accessible in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.
This initiative by Google is part of a broader trend towards data portability between AI assistants. In March 2026, Anthropic had already launched a similar feature for Claude, called Import Memory, which relies on a copy-paste prompt mechanism. The goal of these initiatives is clear: to facilitate tool switching for users while retaining accumulated context, making the transition less psychologically costly.
A survey from February 2026 revealed that 54% of users perceived a decline in the quality of ChatGPT, and 64% of these dissatisfied users had already migrated to an alternative. With Gemini, Google hopes to convert this growing interest into sustainable installations before Anthropic gains too much market share. Indeed, several users had already replaced ChatGPT with Gemini as early as February 2026.
