Gemini Spark Arrives on macOS
Google recently announced that its intelligent agent, Gemini Spark, is now accessible on Mac computers. This integration is made possible through the updated Gemini desktop application, which includes new features. Among these is the ability to stay informed on various topics in real-time and connect to a broader range of applications such as Google Tasks and Google Keep.
Increased Competition on macOS
With this launch on macOS, Google positions Gemini Spark as a serious competitor against other desktop AI assistants, such as Claude Desktop, Microsoft's Copilot, and OpenClaw. Google's AI agent is now capable of working with files directly on the computer and, eventually, managing tasks remotely, which expands its assistance capabilities.
Upcoming Features
Although some features are not yet available, Google has announced that users will soon be able to assign complex tasks to Spark from their phones. For example, it will be possible to ask the desktop agent to extract information from a file located on their Mac.
Current Use of Spark
Currently, Spark can be used to organize and sort files, or to use these files as a basis for creating new documents or spreadsheets in Google Workspace. Google offers, for instance, to transform invoices present on your computer into a budget sheet, thus facilitating financial management.
Limited Availability
For now, Gemini Spark for macOS is in beta and accessible only to Google AI Ultra subscribers residing in the United States. This exclusivity may limit initial adoption but allows Google to test and improve the tool before a wider rollout.
Integration with Google Keep and Tasks
At the initial launch of Spark, the lack of integration with Google Keep was noted as a major drawback. Users expressed the need for better management of notes and short lists that do not require the complexity of Google Docs. In response, Google added support for Tasks and Keep, thus expanding Spark's utility.
Connections with Third-Party Applications
Gemini Spark is not limited to Google applications. It also integrates with third-party services such as Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. This versatility allows the assistant to perform a variety of tasks, ranging from making restaurant reservations to designing flyers and organizing apartment viewings.
Real-Time Responsiveness
Another notable improvement is Spark's ability to track topics and react to events in real-time. This includes monitoring sports scores, stock movements, and breaking news. Spark will also be able to monitor areas such as social media, blogs, online shopping, and weather, providing more dynamic and relevant assistance.
Towards Greater Personalization
Finally, Google has introduced support for the Custom Model Context Protocol (MCP). This feature allows users to connect their favorite applications directly to Spark, creating a personalized assistant that better meets their specific needs.
