Full Analysis

Google recently announced a significant expansion of its AI-generated content detection tool, SynthID, during the annual Google I/O event. Initially limited to the Gemini application, this tool will now be integrated into Google Chrome and Google Search, allowing users to verify the origin of images, videos, and audio online.

The SynthID system, which relies on an invisible watermark, was made public after several years of development at the end of 2025. It enables users to determine if an image was generated by AI through a simple check in the Gemini application. With this new expansion, users will also be able to use the Circle to Search feature or right-click on an image to verify its source.

According to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, SynthID has already been applied to over 100 billion images and videos, as well as 60,000 years of audio resources. Millions of users have already adopted this tool within the Gemini application. Pichai emphasized the growing importance of transparency as generative AI improves, adding that Google is introducing content credential checks across its products to indicate whether content is AI-generated or has been modified by generative AI tools.

An initial criticism of SynthID was its limitation to identifying only content created by Gemini. However, Google has broadened its scope by establishing partnerships with companies such as OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, ElevenLabs, a specialist in AI voice generation, and Kakao. Nvidia, which signed on to use SynthID last year, is also part of these collaborations.

Additionally, Google introduced Gemini Omni, a new hyper-realistic video creation tool, which will also integrate SynthID into its videos. Pichai expressed his enthusiasm for this cross-industry collaboration and Google's ambition to set a transparency standard for the AI era.
