Bruce Schneier, a security expert, has commented on a recent decision made by Germany, which states that Google must be held accountable for errors present in the summaries generated by its artificial intelligence. Schneier argues that AI agents should be considered representatives of the organization that uses them, and therefore be subject to the same legal obligations as human employees.
According to Schneier, if a company hires human writers to create summaries, it is responsible for any inaccuracies that may slip in. He believes it would be unfair to allow companies to absolve themselves by citing an AI failure in similar situations.
He warns against the risk of companies hiding behind AI to avoid responsibilities, which could lead to negative incentives for misconduct. Why hire human writers, lawyers, or doctors when AIs are not only cheaper but also exempt employers from any liability in case of errors?
