Google Launches Gemini Enterprise for Legal, Partnerships, and Guarantees

Google launches Gemini Enterprise for Legal, a suite of agents and capabilities designed for lawyers. The tool integrates with law firm systems, covering contract review and negotiation, regulatory tracking, and research in court files and internal documents, and relies on partners such as Everlaw, Relativity, iManage, NetDocuments, DocuSign, Thomson Reuters, Harvey, and Legora. Google claims that neither client data nor model outputs will be used to train its models, stating that the suite was developed in collaboration with lawyers from Cleary Gottlieb and Freshfields. This announcement comes as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Microsoft ramp up their legal initiatives, amid measured stock movements on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Thomson Reuters fell by about 3%, DocuSign by less than 2%
In early trading on Tuesday, legal tech stocks mostly stagnated or slightly declined. Thomson Reuters' stock dropped about 3%, a day after announcing its first artificial intelligence model, while DocuSign fell by less than 2%. In February, a legal announcement from Anthropic caused capital losses amounting to tens of billions of dollars for legal tech and information companies, amid fears of displacement for established players. Google appears to be taking a more conciliatory approach with the ecosystem.
Google commits to not training its models on client data
Google specifies that neither client data, nor outputs from its models, nor other types of information will be used to train its foundational models. The company also asserts that general-purpose AI systems are "far from sufficient" for legal needs, which require reliability and accuracy. It claims to have developed Gemini Enterprise for Legal with lawyers from firms such as Cleary Gottlieb and Freshfields.

Pre-built agents, integration with systems, and business use cases
Unveiled on Tuesday, Gemini Enterprise for Legal is a suite of agents and capabilities designed for lawyers. It covers contract review and negotiation, tracking regulatory changes, and research in court files as well as internal documents. The agents can integrate with the systems where law firm data resides, and clients can connect them to their document repositories; the whole is presented as a central access point for legal work. On the ecosystem side, Google has partnered with Everlaw and Relativity for litigation, and collaborated with iManage, NetDocuments, and DocuSign for case and contract management; other partners include Thomson Reuters, Harvey, and Legora.
Anthropic, OpenAI, and Microsoft are also advancing in law
Since the beginning of the year, Anthropic has been offering lawyers dedicated plugins for document review and drafting. OpenAI is establishing a team specialized in legal software under the leadership of Jason Boehmig, founder of Ironclad, while Microsoft has introduced a legal agent this year. Law firms are facing pressure from their clients to accelerate processes and prove that they are not billing associates for tasks that can be performed by agents. Internally, legal departments are looking to automate further to reduce reliance on external counsel and their bills; many firms have been experimenting with AI tools for the past two years.
