Google Explores Advertising in Gemini

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, recently discussed the possibility of integrating advertisements into the Gemini AI application. While this integration is not yet in place, Google’s Chief Business Officer, Philipp Schindler, indicated that the company is open to the idea. According to him, advertisements, if executed well, could provide real added value.

Currently, Google is focusing its advertising efforts on AI Mode, a conversational version of its AI-powered search engine. Schindler emphasized during a financial results call that this format could eventually be adapted for Gemini. "Our priority right now is AI Mode, but it’s fair to say that we truly believe a format that works well in AI Mode could be successfully transferred to the Gemini app," he stated. Schindler also mentioned that ads could provide useful business insights, and that Google will share all plans at the right time.

A Subscription-Focused Strategy

In addition to AI Mode, Google has also integrated ads into AI Previews, but the standalone Gemini app remains ad-free for now. In January, Google’s global advertising vice president stated to Business Insider that there were "no plans" to introduce ads in Gemini.

During Wednesday's call, Schindler clarified that Google is focusing on subscription plans for Gemini, aiming to offer "a truly enjoyable user experience." However, he acknowledged that ads could play a crucial role in Gemini's growth if implemented well. "Ads have always been an important part of the product scale to reach billions of people," he added.

Competition and Alternatives

Meanwhile, OpenAI has begun rolling out ads in ChatGPT for free users and low-cost subscribers. Anthropic, on the other hand, criticized this approach in an advertisement aired during the Super Bowl, stating that it would not introduce ads in its AI model, Claude.

Google, with its vast advertising empire including search and YouTube, is in no rush to integrate ads into Gemini. The company has the luxury of not needing to resort to ads for its chatbot at this time. Instead, it is focusing on premium features of Gemini in its paid subscriptions, which include services like Fitbit Premium and photo storage alongside its most advanced AI. Google recently announced it has reached 350 million paid subscribers.
