The departures of artificial intelligence researchers from Google to its competitors are multiplying. According to Bloomberg, Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, two key figures in the development of Google's Gemini model, have decided to join Anthropic. This trend is part of a broader context of key talent leaving Google for other companies in the sector.
Recently, Noam Shazeer, a renowned AI researcher, announced his departure from Google to OpenAI. Shazeer, who had been with Google since 2000, took a break to develop his chatbot startup, Character.AI. Google acquired this company for $2.7 billion, partly to bring Shazeer back into its ranks to work on the Gemini project.
Shortly after Shazeer's announcement, John Jumper, director of Google DeepMind, also left the company to join Anthropic. Jumper, alongside Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind, was recently awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on AlphaFold, a tool capable of predicting three-dimensional protein structures from amino acid sequences.
With OpenAI and Anthropic considering going public, these companies are attracting AI talent with promises of equity and new opportunities. This dynamic could continue to weaken Google's position in the competition for innovation in artificial intelligence.
