Google held accountable: AI errors condemned

A German court has recently ruled against Google for the errors contained in the summaries generated by its artificial intelligence. This decision could have significant consequences for companies in the tech sector. By integrating AI-generated previews into its search engine, Google aimed to enhance the quality of its responses by providing automatic summaries. However, these features have been criticized for their numerous mistakes, disappointing both users and publishers.

This week, a German court held Google accountable for the misleading information disseminated by its AI summaries for the first time. The case was initiated by two publishers based in Munich, who discovered that Google's AI previews falsely accused them of being scammers and engaging in dubious business practices. After sending a formal notice to Google without receiving a satisfactory response, they decided to take legal action.

In its defense, Google argued that users could verify the information in the AI summaries by consulting the source links. However, the judge rejected this argument, stating that an AI preview should be considered a standalone statement, understandable on its own, without reference to other possible interpretations or unreliable content. In other words, Google cannot shift the responsibility onto internet users: if the AI asserts something, it does so on behalf of Google, which is therefore responsible.

In light of this decision, which could have enormous repercussions in the coming months, Google has chosen to act cautiously. A spokesperson for the company, questioned by the Android Authority team, stated that Google is investing heavily in the quality of AI summaries to ensure that the vast majority of responses provide accurate information and reflect the data available on the web. He also emphasized that the ruling is provisional and that the decision will be carefully reviewed.

Regardless, this situation sets a concerning precedent for Google, as well as for all companies offering AI features. If this trend continues, all may be forced to reevaluate their tools to avoid costly lawsuits in the future.
