Google Abruptly Withdraws COSMO, Its Experimental AI Assistant

Google recently made a notable appearance on the Play Store with an AI application named COSMO, only to remove it as quickly as it appeared. This app, which seems to be an experimental AI assistant, was taken down for reasons that remain unknown. This situation raises questions about the nature of this release: was it a mistake or a premature launch?

COSMO: A Mysterious AI Assistant

The COSMO app, although available briefly, was explored by the 9To5Google team before its removal. Weighing just over 1 GB, COSMO is described as an experimental AI assistant application for Android devices. It stands out for its ability to use the Gemini Nano model locally, offering three server options: Pl only, Nano only, and a hybrid option, although the meaning of "Pl" remains to be clarified.

Despite a simple interface, COSMO offers a wide range of useful features: list tracking, document drafting, event suggestions, in-depth research, conversation summarization, quick photo searches, reminders, and much more.

A Premature Release?

Although COSMO appears to originate from Google Research, it was published through Google's main account. The app's description stated: "COSMO brings the power of artificial intelligence directly to your device. From organizing your day to answering complex questions, COSMO works behind the scenes to simplify your life."

The swift removal of COSMO casts doubt on its initial intentions. It's possible that Google accidentally launched an app intended for a future presentation, perhaps at the I/O 2026 event. Alternatively, COSMO could be an internal tool meant to remain confidential, serving as a sandbox for developing new features.

For now, we will have to wait for clarification from Google, although it is uncertain whether the company will officially communicate about this incident.
