Google Introduces Gemini in Gmail and Drive
The era of keyword search is coming to an end with the introduction of the AI assistant Gemini in Gmail and Drive. Google is striving to make this tool indispensable for users of its Google Workspace suite. With the arrival of the AI Inbox in Gmail, users have been able to benefit from faster email management and automatic draft creation. Recently, a new feature has enabled cross-referencing information between emails and Drive files. Google is not stopping there and announces two new features.
Gemini Live: Direct Interaction with Your Emails
Google is currently testing a new feature called Gemini Live, which will allow users to interact directly with their emails to find specific discussions or information. Two modes are in development: Gmail Live, which offers voice interaction, and Ask Gmail, which allows for text interaction. These options will be accessible via the Gmail search bar:
- A dedicated icon will activate Ask Gmail with a single click.
- Another icon on the right will launch Gmail Live.
These features will gradually be available on iOS and Android for subscribers of the Google AI Pro and Ultra plans during the summer.
AI Overviews: Instant Summaries on Google Drive
In parallel, Google is introducing AI Overviews in the iOS and Android applications of Google Drive. This feature aims to simplify information retrieval by providing instant summaries of documents. Instead of sifting through large files and opening multiple tabs, users will receive clear and reliable answers directly at the top of the search results. Gemini will analyze the documents to provide these summaries.
This feature, expected to roll out in mid-July, will be available for premium users, including those on the Business, Enterprise, Google AI Ultra, Pro, and for institutions using Google AI Pro for Education plans.
Time Savings and Privacy Concerns
These innovations promise to significantly enhance user productivity by reducing the time spent searching for information. However, they also raise important questions regarding privacy. While Google assures that user data will be protected, the idea of allowing Gemini to access professional emails and documents may raise concerns among some users.
