Hackers and AI Tools
In the field of artificial intelligence security, prompt injection has quickly emerged as a predominant threat. Large language models (LLMs) exhibit an intrinsic vulnerability: they fail to differentiate between legitimate instructions and malicious commands. The latter can be subtly inserted into emails, source code, or other third-party content that the models process.
This inability to establish a clear boundary between reliable and unreliable sources forces AI engine developers to design sophisticated safeguards. These measures aim to mitigate potential damage rather than eliminate the root cause of the problem.
The Push Technique
Currently, the majority of prompt injections fall under a method known as push. In this scenario, each potential victim is specifically targeted. For example, an attacker may insert malicious instructions into an email or calendar invitation intended for a particular individual. This approach requires that the injection be sent to each specific target, which limits the scope of the attack. Thus, mass exploits that could affect the entire Internet are hindered.
