Google recently introduced an innovative feature in its search engine called AI Overview. This feature aims to make searches more conversational and personalized. However, it has revealed significant limitations, particularly in verb processing.
Contrary to user expectations, AI Overview interprets verbs as commands rather than providing definitions. For instance, when searching for verbs like "ignore," "quit," or "watch," users encountered atypical and uninformative responses, often leaving a blank space where a definition was expected. The usual links, such as those to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, are still available but appear lower in the results.
Terms like "forget" also elicit chatbot-like responses, adding to user confusion. This situation was highlighted as Google rolled out a redesign of its search page, integrating AI-generated summaries at the top of the page, relegating the traditional "10 blue links" further down. Robby Stein, product vice president for Google Search, presented this update as a step towards faster and more personalized search experiences.
A Google spokesperson acknowledged that AI Overview misinterprets certain action-related queries and assured that a solution is in development. They also clarified that these responses are not related to the new updates. This issue has also been noted by Merriam-Webster and compared to Microsoft Bing, which offers AI summaries via Copilot and seems to handle these types of searches better.
Concerns regarding AI Overview and the new update raise questions about what they mean for the search experience. Critics, such as Katie Notopoulos from Business Insider, emphasize that these changes could transform the search bar into a mere AI chatbot, posing challenges for traditional websites.
