Last May, the film "Hell Grind" by Higgsfield AI was unveiled at the Cannes Film Market, an event parallel to the famous festival. This science fiction thriller, entirely made with AI-generated actors, had a budget of $500,000. I had the opportunity to attend a screening to assess the impact of this technology on cinema.

Authentic but Fleeting Emotions

In the middle of "Hell Grind," one scene surprised me with its emotional intensity. The protagonist, Roco, reminisces about childhood memories with his lost love, evoking genuine sadness. However, this emotion quickly fades when the AI characters start laughing in sync, breaking the illusion of reality. This experience took place at the Metro Private Cinema in New York, where I felt the infamous "uncanny valley" of AI.

The Impact of AI on the Entertainment Industry

Generative AI has infiltrated various sectors of entertainment this year, raising concerns among creators about the sustainability of their jobs. Rejuvenation technologies and special effects are increasingly being used, and some actors are already losing roles to synthetic characters. The SAG-AFTRA actors' union recently adopted new contractual language to encourage producers to negotiate the use of AI performers.

An Ambitious Project by Higgsfield AI

"Hell Grind" represents the pinnacle of AI use in cinema. Produced by the startup Higgsfield AI, the film aims to demonstrate that this technology can go beyond the realm of short videos. The company, valued at one billion dollars, invested $500,000 in this 95-minute project, a significant portion of which went to computing costs. While AI is already present in Hollywood productions, "Hell Grind" is the most ambitious film made exclusively with AI visuals.

An Innovative Creation Process

Higgsfield AI brought together a team of in-house creators and external filmmakers to develop "Hell Grind." They used detailed text prompts, each around 3,000 words long, to generate nearly 100 hours of content, which was then edited into a film. AI was not employed to write the script, except for a few filler scenes, which CEO Alex Mashrabov deemed less effective.

A Visually Captivating but Flawed Film

The result is a visually impressive film, although the plot is relatively simple, reminiscent of a video game or a special effects film like "Planet of the Apes." During the screening, Mashrabov emphasized the importance of this new workflow, allowing for backtracking and iteration with AI to capture the emotion desired by the director.

The Challenges of AI in Cinema

Despite its strengths, "Hell Grind" has imperfections. Strange behaviors from characters, such as how Roco eats a pizza, and inconsistencies in the AI-generated voices illustrate the current limitations of the technology. However, the idea that AI prompts could become sought-after actors in Hollywood seems increasingly plausible.

The Future of Cinema in the Age of AI

While AI actors and screenwriters are not yet ready to replace human talent in films like "Tár" or "One Battle After Another," the technology is attracting the attention of producers eager to cut costs and speed up production. This is particularly relevant for action and science fiction films, where visual effects represent a significant portion of the budget. AI could also offer new opportunities for independent filmmakers with ambitious ideas but limited resources.
