ChatGPT Joins Your Car Thanks to CarPlay

With the arrival of iOS 26.4 and the integration of CarPlay, it is now possible to have voice conversations with ChatGPT while driving. Here’s how this new feature transforms the user experience in the car.

Key Points to Remember

  • ChatGPT is now compatible with Apple CarPlay.
  • It is possible to have uninterrupted voice dialogues with ChatGPT in the car.
  • To take advantage of this, you need to have iOS 26.4, the latest version of ChatGPT, and CarPlay.

As an iPhone user, Siri has always been my primary voice assistant when driving with Apple CarPlay. However, while Siri is effective for simple tasks, it often shows its limits when faced with more complex questions. Now, ChatGPT becomes a valuable alternative for obtaining information that Siri cannot provide.

Setting Up ChatGPT with CarPlay

To get started, it is essential to have a car compatible with CarPlay. I chose a Toyota Camry 2025, particularly for this feature. It is also crucial to have the latest version of the ChatGPT app. If you don’t have it, simply go to the App Store on your iPhone to download it. If the app is already installed, check for updates by tapping on the profile icon in the App Store, then selecting Updates to get the most recent version of ChatGPT.

Additionally, your iPhone must be equipped with iOS 26.4 or a later version. This mobile operating system update introduced CarPlay compatibility with third-party AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude. Thanks to this integration, it is possible to converse directly with a compatible AI without needing to touch your phone. The companies behind these AIs need to leverage this new feature, and OpenAI seems to be leading the charge.

ChatGPT was already accessible on iPhone via Apple Intelligence and Siri. If Siri couldn’t answer a question, it could pass it to ChatGPT. It was also possible to ask Siri to pose a question to ChatGPT. However, this process was limited to a one-way interaction, where ChatGPT would answer the question and then stop. The new integration now allows for a continuous conversation with the AI.

How the Integration Works

Once all conditions are met, start your car and ensure your iPhone is connected. My Camry is equipped with wireless charging and syncing, which saves me from having to plug it into a USB port, as was the case with my previous vehicle.

On your iPhone, go to Settings, select General, then tap on CarPlay. Choose your car, then tap on Apps. You will see a list of all the apps compatible with CarPlay, among which ChatGPT should appear.

Using the three-line menu icon, you can reposition the ChatGPT entry in the list. I placed it higher up for easy access from the first screen of CarPlay.

On the CarPlay screen, tap the ChatGPT icon and select New Voice Conversation. Wait for the connection to establish, with the text on the screen changing from Connecting to Listening. You can then start your conversation, and ChatGPT will respond as usual.

From the main ChatGPT screen, you can review your previous conversations. Tap on a specific conversation to resume it. If you have saved past discussions in a dedicated project, you can also select that project to access the recorded exchanges.

Limitations to Consider

However, there are some limitations. Unlike Siri, ChatGPT cannot interact directly with your iPhone. The AI does not have access to your emails, messages, maps, or other applications. It also cannot determine your location in real-time. This means you will still need to use Siri to send an email or message, check your calendar, listen to music, get directions, etc. ChatGPT should be viewed as a tool for providing information and handling complex requests that Siri cannot manage.

Moreover, ChatGPT offers other possibilities for assistance while driving. Whether you have a long daily commute to work or are driving alone over a long distance, why not engage in a conversation with the AI to pass the time? Beyond complex questions, you can simply discuss what’s on your mind. You can even use ChatGPT for entertainment. Ask it to tell you a story, play a game with you, or teach you a new language.

Conclusion

I tested the AI by asking several questions and requests. All my questions received answers, and the conversations flowed smoothly and naturally. The voice was clear and responsive. The only slight drawback was the startup of ChatGPT. Although the option to always launch in voice mode was enabled, ChatGPT sometimes failed to start this way, forcing me to touch the screen to begin a conversation.

Overall, this integration is a useful and effective way to use ChatGPT in the car. I won’t hesitate to use this approach the next time I drive and want to engage in a conversation with my favorite AI.
