Sam Altman Revises His Predictions on the Impact of AI
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently admitted that he overestimated the speed at which artificial intelligence (AI) would eliminate jobs. During a video conference organized by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Altman acknowledged that the labor market has shown unexpected resilience in the face of technological advancements.
He expressed satisfaction in being wrong on this point, noting that entry-level office jobs are less threatened than he initially anticipated. According to Altman, the human component in work remains difficult to replace with AI.
A More Balanced Perspective
While he does not deny future transformations, Altman has distanced himself from catastrophic predictions. He stated that he does not expect an employment apocalypse as some companies in the sector predict.
This position echoes that of David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs, who recently asserted that fears of massive job destruction by AI are exaggerated. Solomon emphasized that AI should instead enable employees to focus on higher-value tasks.
Adoption Still in Its Early Stages
Altman also clarified that he did not seek to instill fear regarding the impact of AI following the launch of ChatGPT. He acknowledged that the immediate impact has been less than expected but remains cautious about long-term effects. Although the technology has reached an advanced stage, its adoption by companies is still at a "very early" stage.
