The Birth of an Idea
At 22, Elster has always been drawn to entrepreneurship, influenced by the dynamic communities of Boston and New York. Her passion for second-hand clothing, discovered at the age of 14, shaped her project. With 80% of her wardrobe coming from vintage shops, she identified a need for a centralized platform after a discussion with a friend.
Understanding the Market
To refine her concept, Elster consulted various vintage shops to understand their challenges. Retailers expressed the need to increase their visibility, as most sales were generated by foot traffic rather than through their websites.
Accelerated Development with Claude
Although she has a background in programming, Elster used Claude Code to speed up the development of her application. She started on January 9, and within four days, she already had a functional prototype of her site, named VYA. She invested less than $2,000 in the app's development, funded by her savings and a few grants from Boston University.
Monetization Strategies
The site currently features 38 vintage shops across the country and has about 900 approved users, with 50% being active daily. To generate revenue, Elster applies a 7% commission on each sale, with the average price of an item being $350. She is also testing a model called "sourcing for requests," where customers pay a fixed fee to find specific products.
The Impact of AI on Entrepreneurship
Elster believes that AI has significantly lowered the technical barriers for entrepreneurs. While engineering used to be the main challenge, brand awareness and sales conversion are now the major issues. She plans to hire a marketing director to help her tackle these challenges.
As she prepares to start a career in consulting in September, Elster intends to continue developing her business alongside it, bolstering her confidence and boldness as a young founder.
