Kevin O'Leary Opposes Reduction of His Project in Utah
Kevin O'Leary, renowned investor, recently stated that he would not withdraw from his ambitious data center project in Utah, despite a proposal for a 75% reduction. O'Leary Digital was "surprised" by this request, made by a state legislator. O'Leary defends his project as a crucial job creator and a cornerstone of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The reduction request was initiated by J. Stuart Adams, President of the Utah Senate, who sent a letter to O'Leary. Adams wants the campus, located in Box Elder County, to be reduced from 40,000 acres to about 10,000 acres. He also emphasized the need for stronger commitments regarding water management, conservation, environmental review, heat reduction, and public transparency before the project can proceed.
Reactions from O'Leary Digital
A spokesperson for O'Leary Digital stated that the letter caught the company off guard. "We have not engaged any Utah legislator on this matter. The letter took us by surprise," he said. O'Leary's team is currently reviewing the letter carefully, and Kevin O'Leary intends to respond personally to President Adams before the end of the week.
The Stratos Project: A Controversial Ambition
The Stratos project is a vast data and energy campus proposed to support artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and defense operations. If built at the currently proposed scale, the campus would require between 7.5 and 9 gigawatts, making it one of the largest data center projects in the United States.
O'Leary has expressed his refusal to scale back the project, calling the proposal "outrageous." He told the Salt Lake Tribune that he is "not backing down" from the project, comparing the proposed reduction to an absurd situation where one would buy a house only to live in the bathroom.
Environmental and Economic Stakes
The Stratos project has faced objections from local residents and environmental critics due to its scale, potential water usage, impact on air quality, energy needs, and effects on the rural character of Box Elder County. O'Leary defends the project as a job creator and an AI infrastructure that could support U.S. competitiveness.
In response to the concerns raised, Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed an executive order aimed at establishing stricter standards for data center development in the state. This order includes frameworks to protect water resources, air quality, and wildlife, while ensuring that utility rates and the quality of life for residents are preserved. Adams has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding this situation.
