SpaceX and Anthropic: an AI partnership limited to six months, according to Musk

A Strategic but Temporary Partnership

A few weeks ago, Anthropic signed an agreement with SpaceX to utilize its massive data centers, a crucial resource in the field of artificial intelligence. This partnership, announced at the beginning of May, was driven by the relentless pursuit of AI giants to access maximum computing power. Anthropic, known for its Claude model, sought to leverage SpaceX's capabilities, which recently acquired the AI company xAI.

Revised Contract Duration

Initial reports suggested that the agreement between Anthropic and SpaceX would last until May 2029, with a monthly cost of $1.25 billion for Anthropic. However, Elon Musk revealed that this agreement is only valid for six months. According to him, SpaceX has not committed to renting the Colossus data centers for multiple years, although an extension is possible.

Dario Amodei, associated with Anthropic, thus benefits from access to the gigantic Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers, offering a computing power of 300 MW. Musk clarified on X that the initial agreement is for six months, with the possibility of cancellation by either party, provided there is a three-month notice.

Preserving SpaceX's Computing Power

SpaceX opted for a short contract to avoid a shortage of computing power. Elon Musk explained that it was SpaceX that requested a short-term horizon, not Anthropic. This decision aims to ensure that SpaceX does not run out of computing resources in the future.

Musk also assured that they would not leave Anthropic in limbo and would offer a reasonable exit solution. This strategy allows SpaceX to remain agile in response to its own technological needs while providing Anthropic with a temporary yet valuable solution.
