Engineers Deployed Upfront: A Controversial Role

Chris Degnan, former revenue director at Snowflake, recently expressed his reservations about the appeal of the Front Deployed Engineer (FDE) position for top talent in the industry. According to him, these engineers prefer to focus on developing the core product rather than engaging in what he describes as a role of "glorified professional services."

Degnan, who spent over 11 years at Snowflake before retiring last year, is now an investor and advisor for startups. During the "20VC" podcast, he shared his thoughts on the challenges of hiring FDEs and the realities of daily work. He emphasized that high-level engineers want to work on core projects rather than specific solutions for clients who may not return to the company.

A Rapidly Growing Demand

Despite these criticisms, the FDE role is experiencing increasing popularity, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. According to recent data, job postings for this position surged by 5,230% between January 2025 and April 2026, representing a 729% year-over-year increase.

Major companies like Google and OpenAI have taken significant steps to integrate this model. OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company, backed by an initial investment of over $4 billion, while Google announced the creation of a new organization dedicated to AI, composed of FDEs.

A Model Adopted by Large Companies

Other companies, such as Stripe, are also exploring this model internally to ensure widespread adoption of AI tools. Stripe recently posted a job opening for a "Front Deployed AI Accelerator" within its marketing team.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding this role, Degnan remains skeptical. He asserts that the FDE cannot compete with the principal engineer focused on core product development, highlighting the risks of technical debt and maintenance challenges for clients. Nevertheless, some describe the FDE as "the hottest role in AI."
