An Unexpected Growth of Applications Thanks to AI
While it was predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) would mark the end of traditional applications, the reality seems quite different. App launches are currently experiencing impressive growth. According to a recent analysis by Appfigures, a market intelligence provider, the number of new applications launched globally increased by 60% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. This trend is even more pronounced on Apple's App Store, where there has been an 80% increase.
In April 2026, the total number of app launches surged by 104% across the two major platforms, the App Store and Google Play, compared to the same period last year. On iOS, this increase is 89%. Greg “Joz” Joswiak, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, joked about the situation, stating that rumors of the App Store's demise in the age of AI were greatly exaggerated.
Concerns Over the Rise of Chatbots
This growth occurs amid rising concerns regarding the impact of chatbots and AI agents. Some industry experts, such as Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, believe that these technologies could divert users from traditional applications. The New York Times has also mentioned the emergence of new computing platforms, such as smart glasses and ambient computing devices, which could supplant smartphones.
At the same time, OpenAI is collaborating with Jony Ive, the renowned Apple designer, on a project for an AI hardware device. However, another hypothesis is emerging: AI could actually facilitate the creation of applications, enabling creators without technical skills to develop mobile software.
The Impact of AI Tools on Application Development
Data from Appfigures reveals that certain categories of applications are experiencing particularly rapid growth. Mobile games continue to dominate new launches in the first quarter of 2026. Productivity applications have entered the top five, while utilities and lifestyle applications have climbed to the second and third spots, respectively. Health and fitness applications round out this ranking.
AI-powered tools, such as Claude Code or Replit, may be behind this increase. These technologies make application development more accessible, allowing more people to create their own mobile applications, even designing their first apps.
The Challenges of Managing the App Store
The influx of new applications poses challenges for Apple, which must manage a growing number of submissions. Recently, the rewards app Freecash was removed from the App Store for rule violations after reaching the top five rankings for several months. Additionally, a malicious cryptocurrency app, a clone of Ledger Live, managed to siphon off $9.5 million in crypto from users' accounts.
Despite these incidents, Apple continues to actively work to block dangerous applications. In 2024, the company removed or rejected over 17,000 applications for bait-and-switch violations, rejected more than 320,000 submissions deemed spam or misleading, and prevented over 37,000 potentially fraudulent applications from reaching users.
Towards Enhanced App Surveillance
Experts, such as John Gruber, advocate for the establishment of a dedicated team to monitor fraudulent or misleading applications. If AI is indeed contributing to the increase in app launches, this need for surveillance will only grow. The market could become flooded with new applications, some of which may not be harmless.
