Microsoft is set to transform the gaming experience on Xbox with the arrival of its AI assistant, the Gaming Copilot, on current-generation consoles this year. This announcement was made by Sonali Yadav, product manager for gaming AI at Xbox, during a panel at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). The assistant will not be limited to consoles but will also extend to other services used by gamers.
The Gaming Copilot has been in development for several months and has already been launched in beta on the Xbox mobile app, Windows 11, and the portable Xbox Ally consoles. This assistant allows players to request help using their voice, especially when they find themselves stuck in a game. It offers suggestions on how to progress, answers questions about game history, provides tips or strategies, and recommends games.
Concrete examples of use include the ability to ask the Copilot how to defeat a specific boss or what materials are needed to craft a sword in the popular game Minecraft.
Although Sonali Yadav did not specify which consoles will benefit from this new feature, Microsoft's current lineup includes the Xbox Series X | S. Additionally, Project Helix, a major initiative currently in development, is expected to reach alpha in 2027. This project marks a turning point for Microsoft, being the first significant launch without Phil Spencer, the former head of Xbox. Asha Sharma, who took over Microsoft Gaming in February, is now leading the initiative following the departure of Sarah Bond, the former president of Xbox. Project Helix will also enable playing PC games.
