Meta and AI: A Deep Reorganization
In a world where artificial intelligence is becoming essential, Meta is reorganizing its operations to leverage AI-based coding tools. This strategy aims to accelerate product delivery, and the results appear promising: Meta stands out with a high revenue per employee, a key performance indicator in Silicon Valley.
A New Era for Meta Employees
The era when Meta employees could rely solely on basic coding or product management skills seems to be over. Now, integrating AI into their daily work is essential for advancement within the company. Meta has begun to formalize these expectations, asking some engineers to generate between 50% and 80% of their code with the help of AI, thereby highlighting the growing importance of these technologies in their work.
Mark Zuckerberg's Vision
Mark Zuckerberg sees AI as a means to increase the productivity of his teams. He prefers engineers who can manage AI agents rather than multiplying junior developers for routine tasks. This approach could be viable thanks to recent advancements in AI. However, it raises a crucial question: if AI is so effective, why would Meta maintain a workforce of over 76,000 employees, many of whom are costly?
Employee Concerns
Erik Meijer, former engineering director at Meta, has expressed concerns about the impact of AI on employment. He pointed out that internal initiatives like "AI Weeks" could, paradoxically, threaten the jobs of participants. With an already vast user base, Meta cannot simply multiply new features without risking user saturation. Thus, workforce reduction could appear as a logical solution.
The Transformation of Reality Labs
Reality Labs, a division of Meta, has undergone one of the most radical AI-based reorganizations. The internal tools team, consisting of about 1,000 people, has been restructured to operate in small units called "AI pods." Traditional job titles have been abolished, with employees now referred to as "AI builders" and managers as "AI pod leads." AI is also used to evaluate performance, raising concerns about potential layoffs, despite Meta's assurances regarding job security.
A Look to the Future
The future of AI at Meta looks promising, though not without challenges. Incidents, such as an AI agent accidentally deleting important data, could occur, but they are deemed manageable. Claude Code, a recent innovation, illustrates the evolution of AI capabilities. Meta encourages its employees to experiment freely with various tools, contrasting with the risks taken by some startups that might integrate serious errors into their products.
Towards Increased Efficiency
One of Meta's goals is to encourage flexibility among its employees. As part of the reorganization into "AI pods," engineers are now encouraged to engage in design tasks as needed. This approach could lead to interesting innovations, provided that roles are not too rigid and employees have the freedom to create. However, the emphasis remains on efficiency and productivity, with a caution against the temptation to let AI do all the work.
